Scholar of the Week

Karen Biala

Karen Biala is a sophomore Cellular Biology/Neuroscience and Public Health double major at Rutgers University. Karen plans to minor in Spanish. As a rising sophomore, Karen is already off to an impressive start to pursuing a career in the sciences and making a difference in her community.

Karen is a student of Douglass Residential College, which fosters women's leadership development. Karen has joined the Douglass Student Recruitment Network, where she hosts classes and overnight visits at Douglass for prospective students. This year, Karen will be acting as a tour guide for the Red Pine Ambassadors.

Karen serves as a member of the Douglass Orientation Committee, which plans the programs for incoming freshman, and is a Douglass Orientation Leader for the Rutgers University Fall Orientation program. Karen also works as the Information Desk Clerk at the Douglass Campus Center.

During her freshman year, Karen acted as the Douglass Chair of the Residence Hall Association, which works to enhance the residential life of dorm residents. One of her responsibilities included presiding over the Douglass Residential Council meetings and holding office hours. With the help of her council, she created a proposal for increased safety in the Douglass dormitory.

At Rutgers University, Karen was recognized for being an active participant in the Douglass Student Recruitment Network as well as the Residence Hall Association. She was awarded with a Residence Hall Association Pride Pin for her dedication to the organization.

In her free time, Karen takes hip-hop classes as a Rutgers Performing Dance Company member and participates in showcases at the end of the fall and spring semesters during the academic year.

The Scholar of the Week is a recognition program for NSCS. Members are selected from a list of applicants to be featured on a given week.
